Dr Catherine Young is an expert in bird ecology who works in bird research, on the project to eradicate feral cats from Bruny Island, with NRM south and as a nature guide.
Background
Dr Catherine Young is an ecologist and bird expert with a PhD in behavioural ecology.
Catherine's love of nature grew from her childhood in South Africa, where at home, birds, chameleons and all sorts of animals were cared for and rehabilitated and she spent much time with her family exploring parks and wild places.
Catherine now has over 12 years’ experience as a research biologist including two years with Save the Gouldian Fund and six years on the Australian Bird Study Association committee. Catherine’s research has included a wide variety of environments across the world from the UK and South Africa to Australia. Her work within Australia has included arid zone, seabird islands, the tropical north-west, Sydney, Melbourne and now Tasmania.
Catherine assists with Tasmanian based research by the Australian National University, Macquarie University and the University of Canterbury (NZ). In addition to this she also holds an Honorary Research Associate position at the University of Tasmania, through which she is involved in a number of projects from Tasmanian devils and quolls to wedge-tailed eagles. This includes her own project, based out of Hobart, monitoring woodland birds and providing training opportunities for researchers. Catherine works with NRM South, including on a project to eradicate feral cats from Bruny Island, and works as a nature guide with Inala.
