Track details

Track details

From the car-park walk out onto the picturesque and sheltered East Cove beach. Walk East to the end of the beach where you can pick up the trail up the bank at the end of the beach – and turn left, following the trail north through coastal forest close to the water’s edge out to Grass Point. (Note that there is a turn-off to the right on the way for if you wish to walk Fluted Cape in an anti-clockwise direction, otherwise you will return this way). Grass Point is an open area that provides sweeping and beautiful views back across Adventure Bay and out to Cape Queen Elizabeth. The Nuenonne people frequented this coastline and made it home for more than 40,000 years. More recently, Abel Tasman landed in this bay in 1642, and Captain James Cook landed here in 1777, signalling the start of great turmoil for the land’s first peoples. The remains of a whaling station that operated at Grass point between the 1820s and 1840s can be seen along this walk, and if you’re lucky you may see some of Bruny Island’s white wallabies too. From Grass Point, ascend steeply to the summit of Fluted Cape, which is 272m above sea level. This walk passes closely along very high unfenced sea cliffs, so should be taken with caution, including particularly with kids. Spectacular ocean views back across Bruny Island towards kunanyi and out across the Tasman Sea to the Tasman Peninsula are offered from the top of Fluted Cape. From the top of Fluted Cape the track continues on and returns via a gradual winding descent back to the carpark.

TRAIL RUNNING NOTES: For trail runners running the Fluted cape trail, note that there is a significant up and down gradient for this circuit track, so depending on your speed, 1 hour is a realistic time to complete the trail. Please slow down and take extra care along the top near the cliffs.
