About the region

Mosman is a spectacular peninsula on the northern shore of Sydney, Australia's most populous city.

This suburb with a rich human history and grand historic homes, contains stunning views of Sydney harbour, along with hidden beaches and exquisite patches of national park and bushland. Home to hundreds of species of native plants, and with bushland providing home to over 60 animals, including the powerful owl, Peron's tree frog, and the grey-headed flying fox.

Getting there

From Sydney's CBD, Mosman can be reached most enjoyably by catching a ferry from the Circular Quay Ferry Terminal to Mosman Bay or Taronga Zoo ferry wharf (Ferry Timetable). Alternatively you drive or catch transport via the Sydney Harbour bridge or tunnel and then taking the A8 to Mosman.

Nature

Mosman is an important peninsula on Sydney's north shore with fragments of natural bushland and a bushy coastal fringe. A recent ecological survey of Mosman identified 499 native plant species and 64 native animal species, including 3 amphibians, 43 birds, 9 mammals and 9 species of reptile that frequent the peninsula. There were four threatened fauna species found too, including the Powerful Owl, the Grey-Headed Flying-Fox, the Yellowbellied Sheathtail-Bat, and the Large-Eared Pied Bat.

Six of the bushland sites in Mosman contain Threatened Ecological Communities listed as Endangered.

Rich in birdlife and with a remarkably striking historical, urban, bush and harbour interface, the Mosman peninsula is a precious remnant of Australia's natural heritage in the heart of one of the world's most beautiful harbour cities.

Climate:

Greater Sydney experiences a somewhat humid sub-tropical climate, this is moderated in areas close to the coast. Mosman, being on the harbour, experiences a more moderate coastal climate, with warm summers and mild winters. There is mostly pleasant weather from Spring (September/October) through to mid Autumn (March/April) with average temperatures between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius. January is the hottest month of the year with an average 27 degrees, with June the coldest at 18 degrees and July the wettest. More detail on greater Sydney's climate

Transport

The most enjoyable and beautiful way to get to the Mosman peninsula from Sydney's CBD is via Ferry from Circular Quay - Ferry Timetable

Or if you're driving, take the Western Distributor out of the CBD north, across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, onto the Warringah Freeway, before taking the exit right (east) onto Military Rd (A8) which takes you into Mosman
